Transforming Mathematical Learning in Northern Karnataka: InitMath Camp at Indian Institute of Technology DHARWAD

IIT DHARWAD, in collaboration with the Mathematics Training and Talent Search Trust, hosted a week-long “Initiation into Mathematics (InitMath)” programme from 26–31 January 2026, aimed at strengthening mathematical thinking and pedagogy in Northern Karnataka.

Designed to move beyond rote learning, the programme encouraged deep critical thinking and logical reasoning. IIT DHARWAD hosted the sessions and supported the initiative by waiving accommodation expenses for all selected participants and resource persons. 62 undergraduate students from 40 institutions across Karnataka, along with participants from neighbouring regions of Goa and Maharashtra, took part—many representing Government colleges, ensuring broad and inclusive participation.

The programme concluded with a valedictory session where students reflected on how InitMath reshaped their approach to mathematics. Resource persons shared guidance on sustaining the learning outcomes. Addressing the gathering, PROF. VenkappayyA R. dEsAi, Director, IIT DHARWAD, spoke on the legacy of Indian mathematicians and the philosophy of teaching and learning.

Building on the programme’s impact, IIT DHARWAD plans to make such initiatives a recurring part of its outreach, expanding access to high-quality mathematical training across the region.
